MISSION STATEMENT

The Mission of the Rogue Community College Mathematics Department is to:

  • Maintain and continue to develop mathematics curriculum that sets high academic standards for students and supports developmental, vocational, and transfer programs.

  • Collect and analyze data on department practices and use this to evaluate and improve our services to both students and the community.

  • Provide an atmosphere that engenders trust and respect for all and that reasonably accommodates special needs.

  • Provide effective student placement, mathematics instruction, evaluation of students, course evaluation, and faculty performance evaluations by implementing the American Mathematics Association of Two Year College Standards, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards, and appropriate components of Oregon's educational reforms.

  • Collaborate with educational institutions, community organizations, business and industry in order to establish and implement strategies to help students prepare for entry into the work force or to four-year colleges.

  • Collaborate with other RCC departments to best meet the needs of students and programs.

  • Use electronic technologies, such as computers, calculators, and multimedia tools, to enhance learning and to provide experiences relevant to students' future careers.

PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT

  1. Every student can experience success in learning mathematics.

  2. Students learn best when mathematics is taught in context: When insight and intuition lead to mathematical reality and discovery.

  3. Integrating technology in the learning process enhances basic concepts and expedites the application and discovery of new strands of thought.

  4. Learning and appreciating mathematics is a life-long experience.
