Are You Ready for Math 95?

Your skills with using a calculator to graph equations, solving systems of equations, multiplication and factoring of algebraic expressions, along with solving quadratic equations need to be adequate to be successful in this class.  You should be able to do the following both without a calculator and with the calculator as a tool.  (the answers are at the bottom of the page)

1)      Solve the following by factoring:

5)  A car leaves Washington for Baltimore at the same time that another car leaves
     Baltimore for Washington, traveling on the same highway.  The car from
     Washington travels at a rate of 60 mph.  The car from Baltimore travels at a rate
     of 50 miles per hour.  Washington and Baltimore are 55 miles apart.

a)      How soon will the cars meet?

b)      How far from Washington will they meet?
