Ceramics I, II, III

Introduces materials, tools, and techniques in producing ceramic pottery and sculptural forms. Includes hand building, wheel throwing, glaze formulation and application, firing, and other finishes for clay.

Introduction to Drawing I (Value)

ART131 (3 credits)

Explores how the concepts of light, form, and spatial relationships create the illusion of three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface. Introduces traditional and con-temporary drawing techniques using a variety of black and white media.

Introduction to Drawing II (Line)

ART132 (3 credits)

Studies how line is used as an expressive tool to develop basic skills in observation, representation, perception, and hand-eye-mind coordination. Introduces traditional and con-temporary drawing techniques using a variety of black, white, and color media.

Introduction to Drawing III (Mixed Media)

ART133 (3 credits)

Explores how abstract and contemporary ideas and images are used to challenge the imagination and focus on the process of making drawings. Includes an improvisational collage-making approach using traditional and non-traditional art materials.

Illustration I (Drawing)

ART237 (3 credits)

Covers drawing and designing for commercial art applications. Includes materials and techniques for book and magazine illustration as well as advertising.

Illustration II (Figure Drawing)

ART238 (3 credits)

Covers drawing and designing for commercial art applications. Includes materials and techniques for book and magazine illustration as well as advertising.

Illustration III (Advanced Drawing)

ART239 (3 credits)

Covers drawing and designing for commercial art applications. Includes materials and techniques for book and magazine illustration as well as advertising.

Figure Drawing I

ART234 (3 credits)

Introduces technique and process in drawing the human figure from real life with a variety of media. Emphasis is on rendering life-like form in terms of the human structure.

Figure Drawing II, III

ART235, 236 (3 credits each)

Continues development of skills to draw the human form from a model. Emphasis is on skills enhancing individual intent and expression.

Beginning/Intermediate/Advanced Jewelry and Metalsmithing

ART257/ART258/ART259 (3 credits each)

Introduces students to tools and techniques used in working with non-ferrous metals through a combination of demonstrations, studio work and group discussions. Furthers design awareness and develops step-by-step metals techniques and craftsmanship skills on three-dimensional form as functional or wearable art. Prerequisite to ART258: ART257 or permission of instructor. Prerequisite to ART259: ART258 or permission of instructor.

Improve your creativity with the spontaneous improvisational introduction to the world of contemporary art. A class in multi-media exploration for beginning, intermediate and advanced students.

Painting I, II, III

ART281, 282, 283 (3 credits each)

Explores a variety of techniques and concepts as related to 19th and 20th century stylistic developments in painting.

Sculpture I, II, III

ART276, 277, 278 (3 credits each)

Introduces basic sculptural materials, tools, and techniques. Includes modeling (clay, plaster, concrete, polyester putty), carving (stone, wood, concrete), casting (clay, plaster), and fabrication (wood, stone, clay).

Advanced Sculpture I (Mold Making)

ART291 (3 credits)

The first of a three-term sequence devoted to the subject of mold making. Focuses on pat-tern development, mold making, and casting in hydrocal and wax. In addition to required reading, students are research the lost wax process and keep journal records.

Advanced Sculpture II (Metal Casting)

ART292 (3 credits)

The second of a three-term sequence devoted to the subject of metal casting. Introduces tools and techniques used in transferring a mold into a cast figure through a combination of demonstrations, studio work and group discussions. Furthers awareness of design and develops step-by-step metals techniques and craftsmanship skills.

Advanced Sculpture III (Patinas/Finishes)

ART293 (3 credits)

The third term of a three-term sequence. Studies sculptural finishing materials, tools and techniques, and includes an in-depth study of various forms of finishes and finishing techniques.

Survey of Visual Arts

ART211 (3 credits)

Enhances appreciation of art by comparing works from diverse cultures and historical periods. An interdisciplinary studies approach is used to reveal the aesthetic, purpose, and meaning of art from prehistory to modern times. Recommended for non-art majors.

Watercolor I, II, III

ART294, 295, 296 (3 credits each)

Introduces watercolor techniques, color theory, media, and development of personal style and imagery.

Cooperative Work Experience/Art

Provides work-related experience and study in selected art environments.

Gallery Design and Management

ART197 (3 credits)

Explores the inner workings of a gallery from the perspectives of the artist and gallery director. Training includes installation of exhibits, communicating with artists, recordkeeping, mailings, shipping and receiving art work, and publicity. Discussion focuses on the various methods of installation, contemporary issues, historical perspectives, and critiques.

Independent Study: Art (Portfolio)

ART198 (variable credit)

Develops the knowledge, requirements, and materials for creating portfolios as used by galleries for exhibiting artists, and as used to gain acceptance to art schools. Recommended for art majors.

Introduces students to tools and techniques used in working with colored glass through a combination of demonstrations, studio work and group discussions. Furthers design awareness and develops step-by-step techniques and craftsmanship skills as two projects using the copper foil method are required.

Special Studies: Art

Emphasizes study in a variety of art disciplines (drawing, watercolor, art history, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, painting, etc.) to fulfill specific educational goals.
