Fire Science
The Fire Science curriculum is scheduled so that a student can begin the program at any time and complete the Associate of Applied Science degree in two years. The two-year completion goal assumes that the student will attend full-time, and that (s)he will attend the courses that are recommended by a Fire Science program advisor. This two-year goal also assumes that the student's placement test scores are high enough to earn a"program-ready" status. If students must first take developmental courses to achieve the program-ready status, the two-year completion goal may be a few terms longer than expected. A Fire Science program advisor can help determine the overall plan.
The following course delivery plan is strictly a tentative plan. Everything contained within the plan is subject to such things as:- Student demand for courses
- Recommendations by the Fire Science Advisory committee (Rogue Interagency Training Association)
- Funding
- Community needs
- New technologies
On July 18, 2002, the Fire Science program coordinators met with the Rogue Interagency Training Association (RITA) and established the following priorities for delivering courses:
- Firefighter I Academy - At least four Academies per year
- Fire Science curriculum - All core courses offered on a 2-year cycle, electives on a 3-4 year cycle
- Basic Wildland Firefighting (S-130/190) - at least four courses per year
- Workshops - As demand and funding allows
- Other Wildland courses (200-level) - As demand and funding allows
- Seminars - As demand and funding allows
- Outreach - As demand and funding allows
This plan will be reviewed each year to assure that it meets the needs of the fire service community.
